Road fatalities currently lead the list of accidental deaths in India, much more than any other accidental deaths like by drowning, fire, rail or air mishaps, etc. At the inquest of the world’s first road traffic death in 1896, the Coroner was reported to have said ‘this must never happen again’. More than a century later, 1.19 million people are killed on roads every year and up to 50 million more are injured. 

Road Safety is critical issue with more than 1 reported fatality every three minute in India. Thus, there are many dimensions to the problem. Unfortunately, India does not have as many running initiatives or organizations and we too, are not huge to address all issues. India ranks 1st in the number of road accident deaths across the 199 countries reported in the World Road Statistics, 2018 followed by China and US. As per the WHO Global Report on Road Safety 2018, India accounts for almost 11% of the accident-related deaths in the World. 

Road safety awareness is the foundation of preventing road crashes, saving lives, and creating safer communities. Effective awareness initiatives educate people about safe road behaviour, encourage responsible decision-making, and promote a culture of respect among all road users. Road safety awareness can be delivered through various approaches, including:

School Road Safety Education – Teaching children safe pedestrian, cycling, and passenger behaviours from an early age.

Community Awareness Campaigns – Engaging local communities through workshops, rallies, street plays, and public outreach programmes.

Driver Education and Training – Promoting defensive driving, compliance with traffic rules, and responsible driving practices.

Youth Engagement Programmes – Empowering young people through interactive activities, competitions, and road safety clubs.

Corporate Road Safety Initiatives – Encouraging safe driving practices among employees, especially those who drive for work.

Digital and Social Media Campaigns – Using online platforms to share road safety messages, videos, infographics, and real-life stories.

Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety Awareness – Promoting safe walking, cycling, and the use of designated crossings and protective equipment.

Helmet and Seat Belt Awareness – Encouraging the consistent use of certified helmets, seat belts, and child restraint systems.

Awareness for Commercial Drivers – Focusing on fatigue management, vehicle maintenance, speed control, and safe driving practices for professional drivers.

Special Event Campaigns – Organising awareness activities during occasions such as National Road Safety Month, Road Safety Week, and other public events.

Safe School Zone Assessments

SAFE India conducts Safe School Zone Assessments using internationally recognized tools, including the iRAP Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) methodology, to identify risks around schools and recommend practical measures that improve the safety of children walking, cycling, and travelling to school.

Road Safety Audits (RSA)

We conduct independent Road Safety Audits of new and existing roads, highways, and intersections to identify safety risks and recommend engineering improvements that reduce crashes and protect all road users.

Road Safety Inspections (RSI)

Our Road Safety Inspections assess existing roads to identify hazards related to road conditions, signage, pedestrian facilities, visibility, and roadside infrastructure, helping authorities improve safety through practical, cost-effective solutions.

Black Spot Investigation

SAFE India investigates crash-prone locations by analysing road conditions, traffic patterns, and crash data to identify root causes and recommend effective remedial measures.

Community Road Safety Assessments

We work with communities, schools, and local authorities to identify road safety issues and develop practical, people-centred solutions for safer roads.

Emergency Response or First Response plays an important role during any road accident, but we don't have the Emergency Health Care facility in our country to respond in an emergency. The first one hour (Golden Hour) just after a road accident is vital to save a life. As we don't have any emergency health care facility in our country, a By-Stander can respond to an accident victim in Golden Hour. In reality it is not happening, people are not interested because of legal hassles, detention in hospitals, fear of Police, etc. The Hon'ble Supreme Court protected the By-Stander through Good Samaritan Law. But the awareness level is very poor. Only 10-20 percent of people are aware about it. 

The Law Commission of India in its 201st report stated that 50% road crash victims who lost their lives could have been saved if they would have received care on time during golden hour. As per the WHO India Recommendations, 50% of the victims die in the first 15 minutes due to serious cardiovascular or nervous system injuries and the rest can be saved through by providing basic life support during the 'Golden Hour’. Over 70,000 lives can be potentially saved if bystanders come forward to help.

SAFE India is committed to protecting children on the roads by promoting the correct and consistent use of BIS-certified helmets for child motorcycle passengers. Through school programmes, community awareness campaigns, capacity building, advocacy, and partnerships with government and civil society, we encourage parents and caregivers to adopt safe riding practices. Our initiatives aim to reduce head injuries, strengthen road safety awareness, and ensure every child has a safer journey to school and beyond.

In our state natural disaster is one of the common factors. Cyclone & flood brings massive disaster in most of time in our state. We have dedicated team trained under Civil Defence to act in different disaster and emergency. During COVID time our team done extraordinary job in managing Quarantine Centre, distribution of Masks, Food & sanitizer, Creating awareness on safe & hygiene. 

We work on restoration after cyclone, clearance of roads, emergency response & First Response. Our team also trained on fire safety and industrial safety.
